- Amber, this is beautifully written! Reading your post brought me right back to that night. I love how everyone felt they needed to be connected to people that they didn’t know. Those two people (the old woman and the young man) felt it was their obligation to comfort you. I really hope that people remember how they felt that night. I hope that they take that feeling and pass it on to as many people as possible.read more
- Thank you for writing about this! As a black young woman I was so excited to see that Disney finally thought it important to create the black princess. When I researched the movie (prior to the completion of a trailer) and I did not like what I saw. The concepts for Tiana were ridiculous and I’m pretty sure that Disney knew that making Maddie the Chambermaid instead of Tiana the Waitress would not fly. They have come a long way and we can all correct them later. I think everyone should at least try to see Disney’s first attempt at creating a character that relates to the African-American community directly. I will watch, and if need be, complain later.

Is Barack Obama really to blame for the economy-crisis, gay marriage not passing, everyone losing their jobs, corporate spending, etc. Of course not. He needs our help to find out what we want. People should continue to tell their governments that they want everyone in this country to get married regardless of race, color, or creed. We should continue to let our federal government know that we are not content with the way that businesses are conducting themselves. Without that, the same people are going to continue to run OUR government. It is not the entire answer, but it is a start. Complaining, I feel, is only for those who continue to try, to the best of their abilities, to little or no avail, not for those who do not try at all.

These people can be a minority and maybe that is all that we can hope for. Even when people disrespected former President Bush, I was upset. Don’t be rude and disgusting. Personal attacks make you and your argument seem juvenile. It’s as easy as that.
read more- What I did not understand when I had relaxed hair (and was young) was that my natural hair was not bad, just misunderstood. I decided to take on the challenge to understand me, all of me, including my hair. I have had so many things done to my hair and my final choice to go natural was not decided by my family, my friends, or strangers. I found that my natural hair was what looked best on ME. It was strong and with help from both nature’s and man’s products, my hair was healthy. I did not look down upon my “relaxed friends”, nor did I put my “natural friends” on a pedestal. My thoughts and emotions were going to be directed inward. The strongest emotions of my natural hair journey were loneliness and pride. When no one supported my decision to go natural, I felt I had to defend myself and my hair. Seeing that the majority of black women had relaxers and that the majority of black women in the public eye had weaves, the natural woman in me, lost in the haze of extensions and chemical straighteners, was trying to GET OUT! Each time I fought against the comments about my hair and the “suggestions” to straighten it, I felt stronger, prideful. I am not my hair, but my hair sure is a part of me.
