- I actually agree with you. It's very difficult to describe what Malcolm's reported same sex encounters as gay or on the down low. But I thought it was kind of interesting in the book as well as the movie, he did not have any problems with detailing other gruesome details about this life, his being a pimp, his drug addiction, etc. But if this book is credible, then he did purposefully omit the same sex encounters. I guess that is what I was trying to get at. It's OK somehow to forgive forcing women into prostitution, robbing, selling drugs, etc. Yet, the only victimless crime he may have committed was something society at the time could not accept. And honestly, I think based on the reax to this story, still can't accept. But it is nice to read a very well thought out response, instead of the gut "Oh, no you didn't try to disgrace Malcolm's name" reaction. read more
- Yet Perry's book documents Malcolm X's many gay experiences. A schoolmate, Bob Bebee, recalls the day they stumbled on a local boy jerking off. Malcolm, Bebee recalled, ordered the youth to masturbate him, and subsequently boasted he had given him oral sex. Later, from the age of 20, Malcolm had sex with men for money - as hinted at in Spike Lee's 1992 biopic - and he had at least one sustained sexual liaison with a man. While living in Flint, Michigan, his roommate noticed that instead of sleeping in the room they were sharing, Malcolm sneaked down the hall to spend the night with a gay transvestite named Willie Mae. In New York, two of Malcolm's friends from Michigan remember bumping into him at the YMCA, where Malcolm bragged he earned money servicing "queers". Later, Malcolm worked as a butler to a wealthy Boston bachelor, William Paul Lennon. According to Malcolm's sidekick Malcolm Jarvis, he was paid to sprinkle Lennon with talcum powder and bring him to orgasm. Perry suggests that Malcolm's gay encounters may not have been entirely financially motivated. His masculine insecurities and ambivalence towards women fit the archetype of a repressed gay man and point to latent homosexuality.
read more- You are correct about the headline. It should have been that he was likely bisexual at least for some period of his life. I don't think it is entirely revisionist history though. Malcolm was a male prostitute before going to prison. I think some of the conclusions the writer draws about him making the choice to be a male prost. may be projecting a bit. Either way, I understand your criticism.
read more- Right, I know American involvement there dated back further, just tried to truncate the history a bit. Steele is an idiot. But I still maintain that he has a point. 1.) It's still not that clear to me why we are there. 2.) How will we be able to leave and 3.) No country has ever waged a successful military campaign in Afghanistan. Even a broken clock is right two times a day.
