D.C. Church-goer Withdraws Lawsuit Over “Disgusting” Gay Marriage

CNN reports that Yvonne Moore, a lifelong southern Baptist and D.C. resident, launched a lawsuit in early 2007 against her church of close to 40 years for performing gay marriages which she described as “disgusting.”

Moore, who has since dropped the lawsuit, was suing to receive her weekly donations back, which she estimated to total over $250,000 in that time period.

“Why did I do it?” Moore said during a CNN interview. “That’s a good question. It’s funny now because that’s not of God. That was me. I just got pissed off.”

On Wednesday, we heard closing remarks in the landmark Proposition 8 case. Litigants in this case want to overturn Caifornia’s voter-approved ballot measure banning gay marriage. It’s not the final chapter in this case as it will likely end up before the U.S. Supreme Court.

This is a history-setting case, no less important than Brown v. Board of Education. It is no less pivotal than the national voting act. Regardless of which side you are leaning -- in this case it is pretty clear that the judge appears to be leaning against gay marriage -- he should at least be taking the case seriously.

In the move to make gay marriage legal in Washington D.C., the campaign was framed differently, according to the Associated Press.

Over the past year, both sides have courted the support of Washington's black community, a majority of the city's 600,000 residents and one traditionally perceived as opposed to same-sex marriage.

"In D.C., outreach to African-Americans wasn't part of the campaign. It was the campaign," said Michael Crawford, the leader of a pro-same-sex union group, D.C. For Marriage.

It was cold and drizzling outside the City Courthouse just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, but no one seemed to mind among the same-sex couples waiting for the chance to apply for a marriage license, according to the New York Times.

“This is a dream come true,” said Sinjoyla Townsend, 41, as she smiled ear to ear and held up her ticket indicating she was first in line with her partner of 12 years, Angelisa Young, 47. “We wanted it so bad.”

Gay rights advocates hailed the day as a milestone for equal rights and a symbolic victory as same-sex marriage became legal in the nation’s capital.

The day before same sex marriage becomes legal in the District of Columbia (Wednesday), Catholic Charities modified its personnel policies refusing to pay for the health benefits of any newly married couple it employs.

The memo, signed by the charity's president, doesn’t mention gay marriage by name. He just references the need to change policy due to a “change in law.”

"We sincerely regret that we have to make this change... but it is necessary to allow Catholic Charities to continue to provide essential services to the clients we serve in partnership with the District of Columbia while remaining consistent with the tenets of our religious faith," read the memo.

Maryland's Attorney General Says State Could Recognize Gay Marriage

According to CNN, Maryland's attorney general said Wednesday that the state may legally recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.

He noted that his opinion is "not itself the law of Maryland in the same sense as a statute enacted by the Legislature or court decision elaborating the common law or construing a statute." Rather, it is an interpretation of law intended to guide courts and government agencies, he said.
