When thinking about ways to save more money, start by first examining where you spend money on daily basis. You might need to break some daily habits and make some new ones in order to keep more money in your pocket.
Skip Starbucks. A typical day at work for most of us includes a stop or two for coffee or tea but when you really think about it, a couple bucks here and there there really add up. The Specialty Coffee Association of America, which tracks consumer spending of high quality coffee used in most cafes, found that Americans spent about $12 billion in 2006, ABC reports.
"Say you're spending $4 a day every workday, that's $80 a month times 12 months a year. That's almost $1,000 a year," said Christine Benz, Morningstar.
Buying a large pack of ground coffee for about $10 dollars will take you a long way; yes, you'll have to take the time to make it but really it's the same amount of time you'd spend at a coffee shop.
Pay close attention to your phone bill. Are you paying too much for your phone service and don't even know why? Pay attention to your phone bill to see what you're paying for. Check to see if you can cancel one line or change your plan. Find out which package fits your needs and don't pay for anything you don't use.
Learn how to cook. Do you usually head out to your favorite restaurant near work for a good lunch? Well, learning how to cook simple foods will save you the $5 to $10 you spend on lunch every day. For example, if you like sandwiches, then you could buy sandwich bread, your favorite meat, condiments, etc. which will last you for a good while. You can also get creative and make pasta, salads or your favorite childhood dish so you won't get bored. If you think you don't have time to cook, think again. Great new cookbooks have recipes, which can also be found online, especially for people who don't have much time to spend in the kitchen.
Buy your wanted items when they go on sale. Retailers love impulse buyers. Are you one of them? Something to take into consideration is that whatever you really want will sooner or later go on sale. Online shopping has made it so much easier to keep track on when an item is shifted into the clearance department. It is healthy to treat yourself sometimes, but buying items on sale will save you money and make you feel great that you're buying what you want without squeezing your budget.
Cut utility bills by going green. If you are not in the room, then learn to turn off the lights. Basically, start going green. Going green will actually benefit you as much as the environment. By buying efficient light bulbs, lowering the thermostat and turning off the air-conditioning, you will save a good amount on utility bills.
