After the excitement of the new year, attention has turned to vacation planning and, in this economy, whether the expense will cause financial strain. But having fun and enjoying a well needed break doesn't mean you need to spend a lot of money. After all, what good does the trip do if you come home stressed about paying or not being able to pay your bills?
Here's some things to keep in mind when planning your travel schedule:
You don't have to fly to get away. Take a road trip to a city or town near where you live. Go and explore the places many of your friends and family don't even know exist. This way, you benefit from an exciting trip without exceeding your budget.
Try the all-inclusive. Some vacations require you to pay the total cost upfront including your daily meals and in some cases, alcohol. This gives you control of how much you'll spend- even before the trip starts.
Dine in. When you're on a vacation, a lot of money is spent on food. Choose to make some meals at the place you're staying rather than eating out three times a day. Eating in might leave some extra money to pick up some more souvenirs.
Bring your own entertainment. Be sure to pack movies, your computer, a pack of cards and reading material so you don't have to spend money for outside entertainment— or transportation.
Rethink holiday travel. Vacation spots are packed with visitors during holidays, which makes prices and plane tickets skyrocket. Consider traveling before or after a holiday or opt to celebrate at home.
